Flash Fiction #39

I saw this writing prompt on a subreddit that is intriguing.

"You awake in a hospital bed with an unfamiliar person referring as your wife telling you were in a bad crash and lost all your previous memory. Unknown to her, you remember everything"

When the surroundings became clearer, confusion and worry were the first emotions that Jackie could think of at the moment. He thought, where am I?

A woman that sat beside him laying in bed stood up filled with excitement. "Doctor! Nurse! He's awake!"

"W-Where am I?"

"You're in St. Michael's Hospital. Thank God that you're waking up." The woman continued to wipe her tears with a tissue, unable to contain the happiness. "I was so worried that you weren't going to wake up after the car accident a month ago."

Jackie's eyes widened at hearing the piece of information. "Car accident? A month ago?"

She asked, still sobbing, "Do you remember anything about what happened?"

Jackie looked at the unfamiliar person sitting beside him, and had even furrowed the skin between his eyebrows trying to recall who was this woman. "I'm sorry, who are you? I don't remember you at all. Where is Jessica? Does she know I'm here?"

The nurse walked into the room at the last exchange of words. She smiled, "She's your wife."

"Technically, fiancee." Jessica corrected the nurse, and asked, "Was the head trauma that bad?"

"There was a chance when we told you after the surgery, but I need to ask the doctor to do more tests to confirm the extent of the amnesia."

At the ongoing conversation between Jessica and the nurse, Jackie knew the woman posing as his fiancee was not Jessica. "Nurse, please check on the whereabouts of Jessica Parsons for me. This woman is an imposter! I swear on it!"

Jessica moved to sit on the side of the bed, holding onto Jackie's hand. "A couple of therapy sessions should work out your memory in no time. I know one month can be difficult to catch up on everything that you miss, but we can get through this together."

The nurse finished doing her rounds in this room and proceeded to leaving to give the couple their space. "I'll notify the doctor to check up on you for further tests. I'm happy for you both. You don't know how many hours she stayed by your side while you slept on this bed."

After the nurse left, Jessica leaned towards Jackie and gave him a kiss on the forehead. "I've dreamed of us being together forever. I'm glad that the dream isn't over yet." There was a glint of something in her eyes as she said it, but Jackie couldn't make out what it meant except there was something odd about it. He dismissed it as an illusion, something that his eyes were tricking his brain. Maybe it was his subconsciousness that knew something wasn't right about this situation. He knows that he'll pass the subsequent tests from the doctors with flying colours, so he can finally leave the hospital soon. Even if he has to act as this woman's fiancee for a while longer, he'll try to get through it for Jessica's sake.

This is in hopes of Jackie wanting to find out the truth and to get back to the real love of his life.
